Afternoon walk

Today is Armistice day and a holiday here in Belgium. So we decided to go out this afternoon to Virelles for a walk. It was a nice cool Autumn afternoon for a walk but the sun was missing, still Autumn has a certain feeling about it that I like.

The lake at Virelles is drained every three years to maintain the natural balance of life there. If things are left too long the fish grow too large and this has a negative effect in the long term. When the lake is drained and the 10 to 17 tons of fish removed an eerie change comes over the lake and many different species of birds flock from all around to fish in the pools that are left as there is quite a diversity of different fish from the lake.. eel, carp, tench, pike, perch etc etc. However, the lake was drained last week-end and unfortunately at the time we were in England but I did get to taste some of the eel today and Heike got to taste the last fish soup. Some of the fish go to different sites to replenish fish stocks, some go to restaurants and some are kept back to repopulate the lake when it is refilled.
